Bernd Spiessl

Bernd Spiessl, born 1921 in Nittenau/Germany was a significant professor in the range of maxillofacial surgery. He received a doctorate in medicine and dental technology in 1952 (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich) and 1960 (Universität Hamburg). In 1965 he was appointed to the first extraordinary chair for maxillofacial surgery at the Basel University.

He was an outstanding personality, a passionate and excellent surgeon and scientist. With his innovative and unconventional ideas, Bernd Spiessl brought important progress to medicine, mainly in the field of head and neck tumor surgery. He was one of the first scientists who used osteosynthesis as method of treatment in traumatology and defective surgery (facial).

1972/1973 he was president of DGMKG (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Mund-Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurgie), the German Association of Specialists for oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Bernd Spiessl became doctor emeritus in 1987, he died in 2002.

In memory of and in in honour of Bernd Spiessl, every annual symposium “Innovation meets Art” starts with a memorial service.
